You guessed it. The team that said if Trump didn’t IMMEDIATELY accept a Hillary victory, he constituted a ‘Threat’ to the peaceful transfer of power — STILL hasn’t accepted a Trump win.
There is a whole lot of BS to weed through in this one.
Come on, Politico… we KNOW you can do better than this.
Alright, here we go. With a title like this…
… you know it will be a doozy.
Hamilton and his colleagues never could have envisioned a year like 2016, when an enemy state—Russia—was able to manipulate America’s election process with stunning effectiveness. But it’s clear the national security rationale for the Electoral College is outdated and therefore it should be retired.
After several recounts that showed the numbers checked out… we’re STILL waiting for proof that even a single vote was changed by Russians…
In Hamilton’s day, as he argued, it would have been nearly impossible for a hostile power to co-opt dozens of briefly chosen electors flung across 13 states with primitive roads. But in the social media age, the Electoral College system provides ripe microtargeting grounds for foreign actors who intend to sabotage presidential elections via information and disinformation campaigns, as well as by hacking our voting infrastructure. One reason is that citizens in certain states simply have more voting power than citizens in other states, such as Texas and California. This makes it easier for malign outside forces to direct their efforts.
If you’re REALLY worried about co-opted elections, you may want to approach the DNC about the … ‘irregularities’ in their Primaries.
While you’re at it, you might ALSO take a moment to ask yourself why… for such a coveted position as the Presidential Nominee, the only other candidate was a guy who was an INDEPENDENT.
Compared to the field of 17 candidates on the Right… that seems juuuuust a little ‘suspect’.
Tara Ross, Legal Scholar, has made a couple of Prager University videos that explain the Electoral College and why we need it today:
But just in case you distrust Right-leaning sources, let’s let hard-left site “SLATE” give a few reasons why Politico is WAY wrong on this case:
1) Certainty of Outcome
2) Everyone’s President
3) Swing States
4) Big States
5) Avoid Run-Off Elections
Here are a few other good reasons from a site called ‘Science Buzz‘.
The Electoral College protects and empowers minorities. Candidates might ignore a small minority in a national election. But groups concentrated in specific areas can have a significant influence in those states. By forcing candidates to compete for states rather than for individual votes, the Electoral College system gives minorities a stronger voice.
But perhaps the most far-reaching consequence of the Electoral College is that it has led to the development of two political parties that strive for broad appeal. Most other democracies have dozens of parties, many with very narrow agendas. With so many parties dividing the legislature, it can be difficult to get them to agree on anything. But the Electoral College requires a candidate to win a majority of electoral votes. If there were three or more parties, that would almost never happen. Thus, American politics evolved to have two national parties, each of which needs to appeal to as many people as possible.
Protecting the interests of Minorities IS still a good thing to the folks over at Politico… isn’t it?
If you’re looking for something a little more ‘scholarly’ check out Heritage Foundation.
Heritage Foundation had an essay on the topic, as well, if you’d like a more in-depth discussion.
But really, it was designed to explicitly avoid the pitfalls of direct-democracy and mob-rule.
As Churchill once observed:
But as for Russia having ruined our election? Let’s ask the Last Democrat in power, what HE thought about that idea:
The notion that Russia altered the 2016 presidential election is so absurd that former President Barack Obama crushed the idea that Russia somehow tampered with votes during the election.
“We were frankly more concerned in the run up to the election to the possibilities of vote tampering, which we did not see evidence of,” Obama said in December 2016. “And we’re confident that we can guard against.” — DailyWire
